National Propane Day: How Propane Is Powering What’s Next
Propane does a lot more than fuel backyard grills. National Propane Day on October 7 is a chance to celebrate the energy source that heats homes, powers businesses, and keeps communities running across the U.S. At GeneratioNext Propane Pros, we love sharing what makes this industry special. Here are a few things you might not know about propane and the people behind it.
Propane Helps Keep the Lights on in More Ways Than One
Power outages are becoming a bigger part of life for many Americans. According to research from the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC), homeowners reported an average of three outages over a two-year period. Nearly half (48%) experienced an outage lasting four hours or longer.
Here’s what else PERC’s research found:
- Only 26% of homeowners have a backup power system.
- About 60% of new homes and 45% of remodels include backup power sources.
- The U.S. Department of Energy projects that annual loss-of-load hours could increase by a factor of 100 by 2030.
Because propane is stored on-site and doesn’t degrade over time, it is perfect for keeping generators running when the grid goes down. That makes it a smart choice for families who want more peace of mind.

Propane Can Help Businesses Save
Electricity costs are climbing nationwide. PERC notes that the National Energy Assistance Directors’ Association reported electricity and natural gas prices rising more than twice the rate of inflation over a 12-month period. PERC also points to the Center for American Progress, which found that at least 102 utilities in 41 states and Washington, D.C., had raised or proposed rate hikes for 2025 or 2026.
Many businesses are turning to propane equipment to manage these rising costs. Popular options include:
- Tankless water heaters or boilers
- Heat pumps
- Generators
- Combined heat and power systems
Switching even one major system from electric to propane can reduce electrical demand and help protect profit margins.
There’s Still Room to Grow
According to PERC, 46% of homeowners say they’re unfamiliar with propane as a backup power source. PERC is also helping businesses adopt new propane technology through its Alternative Technology Demonstration & Research Program, where participants can earn up to $30,000 for sharing performance data.
As awareness and innovation grow, so does the need for skilled technicians, delivery drivers, customer service pros, and more. That makes propane a field with real purpose and plenty of room to build a lasting career.
